Mike Patton's Score for The Solitude of Prime Numbers
Music From The Film and Inspired By The Book “The Solitude of Prime Numbers (La Solitudine Del Numeri Primi)”
Ipecac Records

A green, supple leaf opens to reveal a beautiful red rose printed on the disc, each track sequentially numbered with the first 16 prime numbers. A dramatic opening to a unique sound experience!

Receiving a beautiful work of art in the mail is a thrilling event, especially when that work of art holds the soundtrack for a new film scored by the genius that is Mike Patton.

Based on the Paolo Giordano novel, “The Solitude of Prime Numbers”, Mike Patton contributed music to the movie, and has now created this 16-track CD, released through Ipecac Recordings (release date was 11-1-11). The movie, based on the book, was released in 2010 and stars Isabella Rossellini and is directed by Saverio Costanzo.

Listening to this breathtaking soundtrack inspired me to pick up a copy of the novel, which I devoured in less than 24 hours. Patton’s musical translation captures the isolation -- as well as the human drama -- delineated by Giordano’s misfit characters, Alice and Mattia.

Ever the eclectic musical artist, Patton’s career has been a story unto itself. Boasting such diverse projects as Faith No More, Tomahawk, Mondo Cane, and many (many) more, “The Solitude of Prime Numbers” takes listeners into an even deeper realm, a dramatic and theatrical soundscape that defies my mere mortal attempt at a fitting description. Patton himself describes this release as a personal “sonic departure”.
