Mike Patton's Mondo Cane
Ipecac Records

The genius mind and phenomenal voice behind Faith No More, Mr. Bungle, Fantômas, Tomahawk, and much (much) more, now burgeons in Italian… with an orchestra.

Mondo Cane (literally: “Dog World”), laid out in 11 ballsy tracks that just DARE you to call them sissy, reflects Mr. Patton’s unique interpretation of Italian pop songs from the 50s and 60s (with a few surprises along the way). And, by sissy, I mean they make me want to don a buttercup-yellow taffeta ball-gown and waltz, yes waltz my way across the room and into the arms of *cough* my sexy Italian lover…

As I was debuting the CD for my daughter, with only four tracks into the mix, she asked if we could stop into a local Portland music store to purchase her own personal copy. (Imagine my tires squealing over “Quello Che Conta” as we sped back toward the music store to grant her wish.)

Take a look at the video for “Deep Down” and tell me Mr. Patton isn’t having the time of his life here. The theremin in “20 Km Al Girono” adds a jazzy, psychedelic sci-fi fizz. Rrrr’s trill magically off Patton’s tongue throughout "Il Cielo in Una Stanza".

I once had the honor of interviewing Mr. Patton (coincidentally while he was making Mondo Cane). One of the things he mentioned in the interview was that when he did voices for projects such as “Metalocalypse” and the tormented zombie creature voices in the movie “I Am Legend”, he would scream so hard that he would sometimes need to vomit into a garbage can. Now, as I listen to “Urlo Negro” and the intense vocals of this track, I can’t help but wonder if Mr. Patton has a bucket waiting at-the-ready. This is my favorite track on the album. How often do you get to slam dance to a catchy-sounding pop tune, which is actually a song about the Civil Rights struggle? Here’s your chance!

While I try to avoid using the term “epic” to describe Mondo Cane, that’s exactly what comes to mind. Cinematic soundscapes fronted by the voice of    The Bionic Commando? If you over-analyze it too much, then it just gets weird. So just pick up a copy already and enjoy the hell out of it!
